How to Prevent Backlash on Casting Reel
Backlash refers that fishing line on spool (casting reel) overlays, twines or accumulates and cannot outlet during casting. Almost every beginner may face with such situation and it is also the largest difficulty in practice.
In fact, theory of backlash is quite simple. The main reason is that velocity of spool highly exceeds than the flying velocity of lure, resulting in fishing line in spool accumulating rapidly. The following points can help beginner stop backlash from being caused.
1.Exaggerated casting can cause overspeed rotating velocity of spool. And overspeed outlet leads to line accumulate in spool and backlash in further.
2.Casting should be at 10 oβclock. Too low casting lets the lure drop too closed. If drop point is too closed, the lure has no enough flying distance and time to take the line from spool time, causing backlash.
3.If casting lure with light weight or high wind resistance, braking force should be reduced as much as possible. Although it may not have long casting distance, it can reduce the possibility of backlash largely for beginner. With mastering casting skills, angler can reducing braking force gradually by adjusting braking device.
4.Use lure having high weight and small wind resistance. For example, egg-shaped frog having the smallest wind resistance is better. The heavier is, the better is. Egg-shaped frog can maintain its flying velocity for it having no external substance which increasing wind resistance. It can take out the line with its fast and lasting enough velocity, highly reducing the possibility of backlash. In theory, lure having high weight and small volume needs large braking force while lure having light weight and large volume needs small braking force.
5.Casting lure against the wind. The lure has large wind resistance and the velocity attenuates too fast. The lure cannot take out the line timely and cause backlash. For casting crosswind, the line is blown with lateral radian by crosswind. The radian is enlarged with the line constantly being extended, which leads to fly velocity attenuate and backlash.
6.Thumb braking is the most efficient braking methods. During casting, thumb should be always put on the spool. Intervention for spool rotating is carried out according to the change of casting situation. This tip only can be masted though constant practice. And that is also the most important point when practice casting.
7.Lines having small surface friction, good smoothness and softness should be used as far as possible. So, fishing line has better passing ability when it crosses through guide line, slowing down attenuation of flying velocity partly.
In general, beginners must need to know necessary basic necessary, catching the points. Then, gradually increase movement range and velocity of casting, until proficiency.
